International Dance Day Special

Daisy Shah, an actor, describes dance as an emotion and says it will always be her first love. Dancing is a means to express your feelings. I’m one of the many folks that finds it difficult to communicate in words. In light of this, Shah explains, “Music is the simplest way for me to express my feelings to someone,” striking a position exclusively for HT City in honor of International Dance Day.

Shah, who was raised in Bombay, fell in love with dancing in school. “I used to participate more in extracurricular activities, and dance was just something I naturally gravitated toward, even if I was strong at studies. I was on the list for the annual day sports function, or anything dance-related. That’s how I fell into dancing,” says Shah, who began her career in show business training under choreographer Ganesh Acharya.

Dancing Training

It’s interesting to note that she happened to be an extra on a Bollywood film set in 2000 by pure happenstance. “Ganesh Master Ji’s song is amazing. Since it was raining that day and some of the dancers were unable to make it to the shoot, our coordinator—who was aware of my dancing training—included me in the ensemble. That was the origin of dance in Mumbai. Remembering that session, Shah says, “Masterji saw me and asked his assistant to take my number for the next shoot.” Shah began her career as an assistant choreographer and later went on to become a model, dancer, and actor in films, making her feature debut in Jai Ho (2012) starring Salman Khan.

Love to Dance

Shah refined her Bollywood dancing techniques under the guidance of choreographer Ganesh Acharya. He is the mass choreographer for Bollywood. He believes that any dancer who performs with his group is free to choose any style of dancing. That was the benefit, then. When someone inquires about my area of expertise, I always respond with Bollywood masala. Shah says, “I can do every form. I can’t choose just one song that I love to dance to; all of the ’90s songs are my all-time favorites.
