The second Sunday in May is always Mother’s Day. It is on May 12 this year. moms Day is a global celebration honoring moms and mother figures. It’s a day to tell them how much we love and appreciate them and to express our thanks with words, gifts, and selfless deeds. We also want to remind them that one day is not enough to make up for all the sacrifices they have made for us over the years.
It’s also a day to show your mother or other mother figure how much you appreciate them by giving them heartfelt presents or thrilling surprises. Additionally, you can send them inspirational messages, pictures, and quotes via social media to help them remember the day.
Mother’s Day is observed on this day. On Laetare Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent, “the custom developed of allowing those who had traveled to see their mothers,” as stated by Britannica, during the Medieval Ages.
This became known as Mothering Sunday in Britain, and it persisted there into the modern era until Mother’s Day took its place on May 12, 1907, when Philadelphia native Anna Jarvis held a Mother’s Day Service of Worship in the Grafton, West Virginia, church in memory of her mother, who had passed away.
The background and importance of Mother’s Day
It all started with a strong mother-daughter relationship. Mother Reeves Jarvis founded the holiday in honor of her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, who fought for human rights during the Civil War in 1861.
Anna came up with the notion of a universal Mother’s Day to honor all mothers, to be observed around the anniversary of her own mother’s passing, when Ann passed away on May 9, 1904. On the first anniversary of her mother’s passing, she welcomed friends and family to St. Andrews Methodist Church in West Virginia, which is currently home to the International Mother’s Day Shrine. She gave each mother in attendance a carnation, which is her mother’s favorite flower.
Because of how heartfelt the homage was, she and her loved ones decided to continue the practice every May. They expanded the festivities to include all mothers.
Anna pledged to establish Mother’s Day as a national holiday after witnessing the success of the inaugural celebration. She persisted in contacting national publications and lawmakers, pleading with them to observe the day and honor Mom. The concept quickly gained traction and was adopted by 45 additional states; in 1912 and beyond, several of them even made it an official holiday. Eventually, in 1914, former President Woodrow Wilson declared Mother’s Day to be observed nationally.
