Happy Mother's Day 2024

It all started with a strong mother-daughter relationship. Mother Reeves Jarvis founded the holiday in honor of her mother, Ann Reeves Jarvis, who fought for human rights during the Civil War in 1861.

Anna came up with the notion of a universal Mother’s Day to honor all mothers, to be observed around the anniversary of her own mother’s passing, when Ann passed away on May 9, 1904. On the first anniversary of her mother’s passing, she welcomed friends and family to St. Andrews Methodist Church in West Virginia, which is currently home to the International Mother’s Day Shrine. She gave each mother in attendance a carnation, which is her mother’s favorite flower.

Because of how heartfelt the homage was, she and her loved ones decided to continue the practice every May. They expanded the festivities to include all mothers.

Anna pledged to establish Mother’s Day as a national holiday after witnessing the success of the inaugural celebration. She persisted in contacting national publications and lawmakers, pleading with them to observe the day and honor Mom. The concept quickly gained traction and was adopted by 45 additional states; in 1912 and beyond, several of them even made it an official holiday. Eventually, in 1914, former President Woodrow Wilson declared Mother’s Day to be observed nationally.
